resilience : the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties

Materials Engineering has a similar definition: the amount of energy that a material can absorb elastically and then release upon unloading. Not to be confused with Toughness, the amount of energy a material absorbs before impact breaking,  resilience applies before permanent deformation and way before breaking. It's like elasticity; how much energy can it take and Still Bounce Back to its original form!

This page shows our ability to bounce back from a traumatizing night of flooding in our basement and yard.

We have been planning for storm water for years and kept close tabs on our prevention devices all month, but the evening of May 17, 2020 turned out to be too much. Did MWRD shut off the Deep Tunnel valve? No. According to the National Weather Service, Sunday's precipitation total at O'Hare Airport was 3.11 inches, the most ever recorded on May 17. That deluge came on top of another record 3.53 inches that fell May 14.
